Spring Equinox - Mar. 21st

New Growth

Also known as Ostara. Day and Night are equal and now is the time when Spring really ‘springs’ into action. Nature has awakened and is now preparing field, flower and fauna for fertility and growth. The Goddess is coming into Her Maidenhood and the God is seen as a Youth.

Now is the time to plan your ritual garden, and to make concrete plans for the future.

Most of the symbols of Easter are the symbols of Ostara - eggs, bunnies, rebirth, spring flower crowns and the eating of chocolates after an egg hunt.

THEMES: Animals mate, first seeds are sown, plans are made and first actions taken towards year long goals

COLOUR: All pastel shades, vibrant natural green

TIME of DAY: Sunrise

TIME of LIFE: Late childhood, just before teen

HERBS & FLOWERS: Dill, Thyme, Ginger, Daffodil, Crocus, Tulip - all early spring flowers

CRYSTALS: Moonstone, amethyst, rose quartz

SYMBOLS: Eggs, hot-cross buns, rabbits, lambs, chicks, flower garlands

INCENSE & OIL

The scent of the Spring Equinox is fresh and alive. It should consist of light florals, grassy notes and wet earth. If you wish, you can use the first spring flowers to imbue an olive oil with spring energy and use it in the oil recipe.

2 parts Frankincense

1 part Benzoin

1 part Dragon’s Blood

½ part Nutmeg

½ part Violet flowers (or a few drops Violet oil)

½ part Orange peel

½ part Rose petals

(The above recipe for is directly quoted from Scott Cunningham's book: The Complete Book of Incense, Oils & Brews, page 83, Llewellyn Publications, 1992.)

Oil

1 drop Cedar oil

6 drops Lavender oil

3 drops Rosemary oil

4 drops Vanilla oil

1 drop Patchouli oil

1 tablespoon Olive oil

(The above recipe is the Spring Goddess Anointing oil from Ostara, Llewellyn Publications, by Edain McCoy)
